We Know The Way

Hi, everyone!

This morning, Pt England School had our first assembly for the term, and we were introduced to the new inquiry theme. Our teachers preformed their acts, (or presented their movie to us), as a way of informing their team what they would be focusing on for the term. Examples: coding, navigation, etc.

My favourite act was most definitely Team Five’s. Unfortunately, none of the teachers from the Team Five space could take images of their performance since they were all on stage. I enjoyed the way that the characters’ personalities were realistic. And, of course, I enjoyed how Mrs. Illaoa’s character helped out her friend when she was struggling.

It’s very important to help out your friends with things you can help them with, when they’re in need. And for Mrs. Illaoa’s character, she could help out Miss Hall’s character out with controlling her robot- which leads us to what we will be focusing on this term: coding to make our sprites from Scratch–and maybe even some robots–do the appropriate actions that we coded them to do.

I’m very excited for this term, and I hope it’s full of amazing things in store for everybody.

W9T1 Homework Sheet

Jason Voorhees Character Description

Hi, everyone!!

This is my writing task for today. I had to write a paragraph describing one of the three characters that Mr. Moran had picked. I chose Jason Voorhees, a fictional character from Friday the 13th. I don’t know if we were supposed to make the description up, or if it was supposed to be based on the canon personality, but I based it on his actual backstory and stuff. Anyway, enjoy!

Jason was assumed—and supposed—to be dead after his mother had believed the young boy drowned in Crystal Lake at the age of only eleven. But, she was terribly wrong, and after surviving and becoming a hermit, he had grown up to be an abnormally quiet and large man. With the extreme need to avenge the death of his mother, he haunted Camp Crystal Lake and the area surrounding it, with the intention to slaughter anyone and everyone he encountered.

Hand Span Investigation

Hello, everyone!!

This is my maths task for the week and it was all about measuring the hand span of student’s from Team 5 (but I measured just students from Room 4) and I also had to make a bar graph using the data I collected too.

This task was quite hard to do and it did take me a while since I was busy with other things but I hope you enjoy!

Bedrooms Around the World

Hello, everyone!!

This is my inquiry task for the day. Room 4 sat down today and watched a short 2 minute video
about/showing different bedrooms around the world where some children sleep.

Some of the bedrooms featured in the video were clean and nice, others weren’t so much.
So that’s what this task was all about. We had to select one child and their bedroom (I decided to select three)
and write a little bit about them and the area(s) they sleep, along with the similarities and differences of our bedroom compared to theirs.

In the end, we had a bonus task where we had to get images from online of our dream bedroom.
Although it was weird going from seeing how some kids slept in areas in horrible condition,
(which was very upsetting), to what our dream bedroom would be, this task was a little bit fun.

I hope that some of the children live and sleep in much better places now!!

Home Learning/Reading – Week 4

Hi, everyone!

For homework this week, we had to select a book and write a paragraph
about what we read and our prediction of what we think will happen next.
I chose to read Ella Diaries: Dreams Come True since I haven’t read it in a while, resulting in
me not exactly remembering each and every event that takes place in this book.

The thing with Ella Diaries books are that there are no chapters for each sort of act,
so I just read the first few pages of the book instead.

Official book synopsis for more context:
Ella DREAMS of meeting pop star Cassi Valentine. She has all the song and merchandise- even Bob has a Cassi Valentine bandanna! But when the school enters a competition to win a visit from the star, Ella and her WORST ENEMY EVER, Peach Parker, have to work together. Can they put aside their differences? The whole school is COUNTING on them!

Summary of what I’ve read:
The first thing Ella discusses is how much she absolutely adores Cassi Valentine!! She lists a few things as to why this is, one of those reasons being her song lyrics and music style in general. She even mentions how she has basically every single thing of Cassi Valentine’s like her songs downloaded onto her MP3 player, Cassi Valentine lunchbox and drink bottle, tote bag, and sun visor, even adding in that her dog, (Bob), has a Cassi bandanna!

10 pages into the book, Ella brings up that Cassi’s record company is running a competion where they’d have to make a video about performing arts at their school for a chance for a free lunchtime concert from Cassi herself! Honestly if I were them, I’d be flipping out because imagine having a well-known, famous artist possibly coming to your school?!

My prediction of what’ll happen next:
From the synopsis, I think we can already tell that it won’t exactly be good. The bright side is that Cassi will choose them to be the winning school, (I know this because I’ve read this before and I just have a feeling since this book will most likely have a happy ending), however, Ella will be paired up with Peach who’s literally like her worst enemy in the whole entire galaxy, at this point.

There will definitely be a lot of drama coming up soon but until then, I can’t wait to continue reading this book for either next week’s homework, or just for fun!

Kiwi Kids News – Week 3

Hello, everyone!
Below are the summaries of two Kiwi Kids articles I read for week 3’s homework.

Article one – “Worm with hundreds of bottoms found.”
I think that what the article is about is made very clear in the title. It talks about how a new species of worms with hundreds of bottoms have been discovered.

It mentions that, quote on quote, “The ‘bottoms’ of this worm can detach from the worm’s body and swim away all by themselves.” I thought that that was very cool and a little bit disturbing in a way.

This new species of worms are known to live in sea sponges and have been named by scientists Ramisyllis kingghidorahi, after Godzilla’s multi-headed enemy who is King Ghidorah.

I think that this new species of worms is very fascinating and definitely something new but odd!

Article two – “Walsh lady creates Harry Potter world record.”
To be honest, I mainly just clicked on this article because it mentioned Harry Potter.

Anyway, this article talks about a Welsh woman earning a Guinness World Record for the largest Harry Potter collection. She has collected 5,284 pieces of Harry Potter memorabilia!

Her collection includes toys, key chains, special edition books, illustrations, prop replicas, Lego sets, and a lot more.

I think that this record is definitely very very cool and it’s so amazing how somebody can collect that much Harry Potter merchandise and such! Honestly, I don’t blame her for having so many Harry Potter things.

Whakatauki

For our first extension session, we had to search up some whakatauki (proverbs) and their meaning in English.
We had to try and dig deeper into the meaning of a whakatauki of our choice from this slide deck.
